numbers can be deceiving-the stats don't look bad here for a lot of categories....but I lived in T or c for 7 yrs...maybe the air is clean in regard to normal industrial pollutants and ozone, but the wind blows almost 8 months steady during the year-and it's blowing silt except during fire season, and then you can get "chipolte" silt. there is a very big meth problem, several heinous murders during the time i was there. The sidewalks roll up way before 8 p.m. (many places closing at 5). the jobs that are there pay such a low wage that many people (like me) end up stuck there long after they want to move away. The water is drying up and so Elephant Butte Lake is very low which has hurt the area on all levels....It's a strange town with a strange history; you should know that Geronimo cursed it...and whether you are superstitious or not, there is definitely something off in this town

I've lived here 10 years now and I think what you call "off" others might call quirky. It's a haven for artists and gays who don't buy in to the uppity Santa Fe mold, AND just today (Dec 8) it was warm enough (with no wind) to take the dog out to Elephant Butte Lake (which remains the largest in the state) and let her enjoy herself off-leash. It can be windy at any time and there are a couple of windier seasons (April/May and Sept/Oct) but it certainly does not blow "steady" and we have many days where it's great to go to the water. The hot springs year-round the year Rio Grande running through it in the summer for floats down the river are quite unique. NO small town is right for everyone; the town on the central coast of Cali I left for here drove some "big city" people nuts with the same lack of nightlife and rolling up of sidewalks at night. I know I would rather live here with the relatively mild weather year-round than live through the short summers and harsh winters of Maine! To each his/her own...
